In this painting tutorial, I demonstrate how watercolour can be applied very wet and manipulated to create the effect of distant snowy hills. By adding shadows we can create rock formations, and with my favourite white, make the two dimensions look 3D. I think this painting is a "beginner level", yet advanced painters should enjoy it as well. It's just fun to splash paint over the page, and leave the fiddly bits to last! I often paint acrylics on paper: sort of a mix of watercolour technique with traditional painting. It’s a halfway position which gives me freedom to be creative. It is very forgiving, as one can re-paint sections. This video has the usual hiccups: camera fail, I fail! I used voice over in the middle to avoid having to dump this video. I had lots of fun painting this plein air watercolor at the Wooden Boat Centre at tiny Franklin in Tasmania: it's a real-time demonstration that shows the reality of plein air painting: passing visitors, a barking dog and then some guys taking my boat! I was perched on a sloping patch of prickly weed, and the tide was incoming, which meant half my rocks might have become inundated. Australia is in the middle of the fire season, and after years of drought, it’s the worst fire season on record. Although not affected by the fires, we live near the bush. We have had to self-evacuate a couple of times. Luckily, the fires have stayed 15km away from our home. But sadly, many people have died, thousands of homes are lost, and untold numbers of livestock and wild animals have perished. "Sunrise" This video is about blending. I paint a beautiful sunrise sky that goes from blue to pink, and then the harbour waters that reflect the sky. The land element is comparatively simple. I demonstrate how to achieve smooth blends with acrylic paint, using white as the blending medium. I use "cheap" paints to show that advanced acrylic painting is possible with basic materials. You do not need to spend a fortune to achieve realistic results. This painting is probably best for an intermediate painter, but a beginner will learn from its simple structure! A simple How-To video that demonstrates how I mount an acrylic painting that has been done on paper, onto a canvas. It is a solid, permanent method that I've been using for ten years. I use Bondcrete as a glue. (Maybe try any white wood glue that dries clear) I water it down to about 70% glue – 30% water. I paint it on both contact surfaces, place the paper in place, and then add a final coat over the top of the painting. This helps to seal the edges and toughens the surface. I suggest you try this on a small painting at first! My original efforts were on huge 120cm wide works, and I was often in a mess! But I've never lost a painting using this method. And I do use it for my own watercolour paintings, but I'm reluctant to recommend this, as the paint can loosen and smear when you are applying the Bondcrete. But if you can spray the solution on first, or fix the paint with a suitable fixer, that should hold the paint in place. Please experiment and let me know in the comments if you have success. “Gems on the Beach” A beach littered with volcanic rocks, and edged with clear blue-green water. It is a ‘portrait’ format, and has all the elements for a busy, beautiful watercolour painting. I love this scene, as it has a simple structure, simple colour choices, and a large area of harbour to make doing a “wash” possible. I hope you enjoy watching me paint it. The cheaper “studio” or “students” quality are not as easy to mix dark shades. If you use these, the painting might look pale when it dries. Don’t blame yourself, blame the materials!!
